NEW CLASSES STARTING 02 FEBRUARY - GET IN EARLY!!!
High energy, explosive African Dance classes with Pape Mbaye, Yacou Mbaye and Thiass Mbaye. An exciting and challenging learning experience to the beginner as well as the experienced dancer.
African Dancing, Senegalese style led by internationally renowned dancer and drummer Pape Mbaye. The participants will learn the elements of African Dance, in particular of Sabar Dance but also including other styles of African Dance..
Born into a Griot family of Wolof people, Pape, his son Yacou and brother Thiass have drumming and dancing in their blood. They uphold the tradition of the Sabar dance by drawing power from the tradition of their people.
This style of Senegalese dancing is energetic and rhythmical. Drummers accompany dancers by playing strongly opposed cross rhythms that are laced with grace notes. Using precise control, the drummers weave the rhythms in intense patterns.
Pape Mbaye is well qualified to teach this style of dance as he was a percussionist and dancer for L’Ensembelle Traditionelle Sorano, L’Orchestra Nationale du Senegal, Assmane and Le Super Sabar Senegal. His tour credits include Senegal and New Zealand with Germaine Acongy and her dance troupe Jantbi and Italy with his dance troupe, the Children of Africa. A formidable dancer, he offers up an exciting and challenging learning experience to the beginner as well as the experienced dancer.
African Dance Classes are held every Tuesday from 7.30pm at the Marrickville West Primary School, Marrickville. Classes are accompanied by live drumming. Single classes are $25 each, or $120 for 6 classes paid in advance.
