Teranga School Shows

School Performances and Workshops

“Teranga” is a Senegalese word that loosely translates as “hospitality,” yet as Pape Mbaye explains, the concept is well beyond that literal translation. “It’s more of a philosophical code, it is really, a very strong social value, where families invite strangers in need into their homes. The practice is based on the belief that if a family helps a visitor and extends such hospitality, this ensures that their own children will never find themselves away from home without assistance. If everyone does it, everyone benefits. That is what Teranga wants to convey with its music, it wants to welcome people in. We hope that all of us musicians are good hosts”.

Besides singing and dancing, the traditional percussion instruments used by Teranga include the sabar drums, tama or talking drum, djembe, doundoun and balafon because rhythm is the essence of Senegalese music. It also incorporates the traditional Fula or African flute, plus the sousaphone for added depth.

All children are given the chance to play the instruments, as well as being taught simple body percussion rhythms making this a truly interactive experience for all the children.

The four musicians who make up Teranga will invite the students to an afternoon in Africa. Pape Mbaye, Teranga’s leader, is a Senegalese griot. Traditionally Griots are hereditary praise singers and master drummers who taught history, ethics and religion through their songs. He and and the other musicians will take the children on a journey through song and dance into the heart of Senegalese culture, teaching them along the way that they too can connect with their inner rhythm.

Teranga is able to offer single interactive drumming and dance workshops for children from K to 12, as well as regular African Drum and Dance workshops for children of all ages.

Vacation Programmes

A truly unique experience for your vacation care programmes, Teranga also holds day long workshops for your vacation care centre. This completely interactive programme includes telling African children’s stories, trying on some of the traditional Senegalese children’s clothes and if required also a typical African lunch for all.

Children will discover their passion for music and dance in this full African Day Workshop. The children will be taught 3 African children’s songs and accompanying rhythms as well as two African children’s dances.
