The Details

The dates for 2010 are from 07 June to 03 July 2010 (come celebrate Valentine’s Day in Senegal!) The cost of the workshop is US$1800 (excluding airfare) for the 4 week workshop or US$1,000 for a 2 week workshop and includes:

  • Djembe/Sabar/Tama (talking drum) tuition
  • Lessons in drum repair and tuning
  • Lessons in various styles of African dance
  • Participation in village cultural activities
  • Accommodation and bedding
  • All meals
  • Detailed information booklet including basic words and phrases in Wolof

Unlike many other drumming workshops ‘Drum Africa’ is not a package tour and we do not include airfares in the cost of the workshop. We prefer to allow participants the opportunity to make travel arrangements that are convenient to their plans, and that most suit their budget. We do not believe in making commission from extras to the workshop. We also want Drum Africa to be as independent an experience as possible – we don’t believe in travelling around in air conditioned buses in large groups, preventing participants from really experiencing Africa and its amazing peoples. This non package tour structure also makes it easier for people from all around the world to attend the workshop.

However members of Pape’s family and other teachers on the workshop are always around to help for those uncertain travelling in Africa on their own. We collect you from the airport on your arrival and are happy to act as guides for any sightseeing and village expeditions.

Accommodation is hostel standard - basic and clean with all necessary facilities. It is close to the beach and has good security. All meals and mealtime drinks (tea, coffee, senegalese fruit drinks) are provided, however personal drinking water is not included and can be purchased in bottles at a low cost.

We do provide travel advice for participants when organising their flights so if you’d like recommendations please drop us a line. Many airlines fly to Dakar with routes via Bangkok and  the Middle East becoming more and more popular. South African Airways offers the most direct flights. SAA flies from Sydney via Johannesburg to Dakar.
